Can PVD Coating Be Done on Sterling Silver?

At Illuka Blue, we often get asked about jewellery materials and finishes — especially when it comes to PVD coating. Since we use PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition) for our waterproof, tarnish-proof collections, one of the common questions we hear is: Can PVD coating be applied to sterling silver?

The answer is a little more complex than yes or no — let’s break it down.

What is Sterling Silver?

Sterling silver is a precious metal made of 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% other alloys (usually copper). It’s beautiful, but it’s also soft and prone to tarnish — especially when exposed to air, water, and skin oils.

That’s why people look for protective coatings to make sterling silver last longer.

How PVD Coating Works

PVD is a process that bonds a thin, durable layer (often gold or coloured metal) onto a base material. It’s most effective on stainless steel, because stainless steel is hard, non-porous, and stable — creating the perfect surface for PVD to adhere to.

Can You PVD Coat Sterling Silver?

Technically, PVD coating can be applied to sterling silver, but it isn’t the best option. Here’s why:

  • Adhesion issues: Silver is softer and more porous than stainless steel, so PVD doesn’t bond as strongly.
  • Durability: Even with PVD, silver underneath can still tarnish over time, especially if exposed where the coating wears thin.
  • Cost: Applying PVD to silver can be more expensive, with less reliable results compared to stainless steel.

Because of this, most jewellers (including us at Illuka Blue) use stainless steel with PVD coating instead of sterling silver. It creates the same beautiful gold or silver finish — but with better durability and waterproof properties.

Better Alternatives for Sterling Silver

If you love sterling silver, there are other ways to protect it:

  • Rhodium plating: A common option for silver jewellery, giving it extra shine and protection.
  • Regular care: Polishing with a silver cloth and storing it properly can help reduce tarnish.

But if you’re looking for low-maintenance, everyday, waterproof jewellery, stainless steel with PVD plating is the superior choice.

Why Illuka Blue Chooses PVD on Stainless Steel

At Illuka Blue, we don’t use sterling silver bases for our waterproof jewellery because we want you to have lasting shine, no tarnish, and no worries. Stainless steel + PVD gives you:

  • Hypoallergenic, skin-safe jewellery.
  • Waterproof, sweatproof durability.
  • Stunning 18k gold, rose gold, and silver finishes.

It’s jewellery you never need to take off.

✨ In short: While PVD coating can be applied to sterling silver, it isn’t the most durable or reliable option. That’s why Illuka Blue chooses stainless steel for our waterproof collections — so you get the look you love with the strength you need.
